Gung-Ho
(aka Gung Ho)
File Name: Etienne R. LaFitte of Fer-de-lance, Louisiana.
Grades: Marine E-7 (1983-1987); E-9 (1992-1993); E-7 (1997); E-9 (2001); E-7 (2002-2005/I); E-9 (2005/II); E-7 (2007-2008)
various SNs: MC56488390; MC-564-88-3900; 65-2459-ER89; 656-2456-ER89; RA 564-88-3900; 656-2456-KR89; 656-24-ER89
Notes: Eight filecards spell the first name Ettiene and capitalize the D in the birthplace. The 1987 filecard spells the name Etienne La Fitte. Likely named for French privateer Jean Lafitte, who aided the US during the Battle of New Orleans, and possibly also after Étienne Perier, governor of French Louisiana from 1726 to 1733. Fer-de-lance is a fictional location, most likely along the Mississippi, Red River, or Ouachita River given its swampy topography. (The fer-de-lance, French for spearhead, is a kind of snake.)

Notes: Sunbow's Gung-Ho wore his 1983 outfit with a (usually) cleft chin and a darker mustache and hat, and the hat's angles were more pronounced. There was no detail on the vest, and the camo spots on his pants were very dark green and sometimes triangular. The belt was usually green, sometimes brown. Gung-Ho's file name was mentioned in the episode Captives of Cobra, Part 2. In the Valor vs. Venom film, he had a strong Cajun accent and his outfit resembled the 2002 Wave 1.35 version, but with camo spots.

| Gung-Ho was born and raised in a swamp, went to boot camp in a swamp, and spent most of his Marine Corps career sneaking around in other countries' swamps with a grenade launcher in his hands. He can low-crawl through the nastiest black-water, stinking mud and bubbling slime for a week with half his body covered in leeches and the other half raw with bug bites and still make an 0700 inspection formation with polished brass, spit-shined shoes, razor creases, and a mean look in his eye. That's a Marine.

| Gung-Ho was born into a large back-swamp Cajun clan. He held both the reputation and the scars as a bare-knuckle brawler and knife-fighter in New Orleans. He joined the Marines at 18 and graduated top of his class from boot camp at Parris Island. When the going gets tough, that's when the Marine corps gets sent in. Gung-Ho is the G.I. Joe's scariest, craziest jar-head of the team. He likes nothing better than racing into battle and catching the enemy off guard. Attended: Airborne school, Recondo school, and Marine ordinance [sic, should be ordnance] school. Qualified expert: All NATO Infantry small arms and most Warsaw Pact weapons. He carries the XM-79 grenade launcher as his personal weapon of choice. No man or obstacle stands in his way.
From General Hawk's Files: "When the G.I. Joe team has their backs against the wall, that's where Gung-Ho moves in to do some heavy butt-kicking. He fears no enemy and enjoys nothing better than showing off his tattoos before every fight. He's a lean, mean fighting machine. If he ever invites you over for dinner, never let him talk you into trying his special family recipe for Gumbo soup..."
Motto: "If you want the job done right the first time, you call me!"

| Accessories: black machine gun (92 Gung-Ho's), black backpack (92 Gung-Ho's), black figure stand (common).
| This guy may look like someone out of a Hollywood war movie, but he's no actor - he's the real deal. Gung-Ho has more guts than sense. He has no problem walking through a fierce COBRA artillery barrage just to get a better look at his target. Sound crazy? Maybe, but when it comes to describing the terms bravery, courage, and determination, Gung-Ho is the perfect example. His "esprit de corps" attitude and drive to be the best keeps [sic] him and his fellow G.I. Joes on their toes, ready to go into battle when called. He's so keyed up all the time that the only way he unwinds is when he and Leatherneck get liberty to go out and compare notes with the Navy S.E.A.L.s. The funny thing is that their version of winding down usually results in heated outbursts with their Naval counterparts. What do you expect? They're Marines through and through.
| Toy Notes: Carded in a two-pack with Leatherneck. Item #53060.

| GUNG-HO grew up in the Louisiana swamps, in a large Cajun clan that held huge zydeco camps known for having lots of music and fist fighting. He's at home in brown water environments and thrives on all the heat, humidity, bugs, and alligators. He graduated top of his class from boot camp at Parris Island, then went on to join the G. I. JOE team, where he's called in when things get extra rough. In a covert operation, GUNG-HO blew up DESTRO's major advanced-technology weapons plant. The explosion destroyed DESTRO's personal fortune and set his operations back for years - and made him DESTRO's sworn enemy.
"I like things hot: my food and my missions! Send me where it's meanest - that's why I'm a Marine!"

| The core values of the Marines are honor, courage, and commitment. Those are the qualities that stand out in GUNG HO. He grew up in the Louisiana swamps, a place with lots of heat, humidity, bugs, and alligators. Coming from a tough environment like that, Marine Boot Camp seemed like more of the same. It's the most challenging training in the armed forces, but GUNG HO relished every sweaty, painful minute of it. He knew if he made it to the end, he would be a Marine - one of the good guys in the battle against evil and injustice. He brings iron-fisted dedication to the G.I. Joe team and has led many elite operations against COBRA.

The ROCK CRUSHER ATV is the vehicle of choice for GUNG HO. Light and fast, it can convert to a SPY TROOPS land luge. During one recent mission, GUNG HO went undercover to foil a DREADNOK weapons-smuggling scheme, using the luge's stealthy attack mode to slip behind enemy lines undetected and unseen.

| GUNG HO is just about the toughest Marine who ever slogged his way out of that vacation paradise otherwise known as Parris Island, but he doesn't put on any airs about it. His toughness isn't in bravado or swagger. His toughness is internal and deep. Every member of the G.I. JOE team knows that when COBRA pops an ambush, GUNG HO can be counted on to lay down a covering counter-fire with his grenade launcher without hesitation. They know he'll do his job under fire, and there's nothing better you can say about any soldier - or Marine. Once you are a Marine, you are a Marine for life. Anybody who ever wore the "ball and bird," sang the "hymn" like he meant it, and never "took no guff when the going got rough" belongs to an exclusive club that needs no secret handshake because the members know each other by the look in their eyes and the roll in their walk. They pass each other on the street, at the bowling alley, in the halls of the Senate, and all that needs to pass between them is a softly spoken "Semper Fi."

| Although he is courteous, soft-spoken, and kind to small animals, this does not prevent GUNG HO from being an in-your-face snarling fighting machine when it comes to a major head-to-head with COBRA forces. He has even been known to help COBRA prisoners pick up their teeth after the fight. GUNG HO can sleep in a wet foxhole and wake up alert when it's his turn to pull perimeter patrol. He can make a meal out of a dead snake, and he can drink water that's thick enough to float a purification tablet. He will also willingly sprint across a withering COBRA cross fire to help a fellow G.I. JOE soldier. He can do all this without having his DNA altered by venom serum like the so-called "special" COBRA V-TROOPS.

| GUNG-HO may be the toughest G.I. JOE of all time - just ask anyone who has ever been at the receiving end of the ragin' Cajun's fists. He is always the first out of the transport, the first to take down enemy guards, and the first to run out of ammo. His fighting spirit makes him an inspiration to his fellow soldiers, but also his own worst enemy; he has been promoted for heroism and later demoted for off-duty brawling so many times, his superiors often are at a loss as to what his current rank should be.
Gung-Ho was on vacation in a Russian SAMBO camp, learning the secret Soviet martial arts, when he got the orders to take charge of a STEEL BRIGADE Team and help foil DESTRO's latest scheme. Normally, cutting short his "rest and relaxation" would be infuriating, but for GUNG-HO, putting down the IRON GRENADIERS is almost as much fun. The Marine seems to be making a habit of crushing DESTRO's plans, and working with the STEEL BRIGADE and OKTOBER GUARD just adds more spice to the gumbo.
"I don't care what kind of fancy armor that tin-plated capon has. I'll crush him like a crawfish in a vise grip."
