Notes: Sunbow's Destro wore his 1983 outfit, with a more pronounced red collar. His gloves were entirely silver and usually had no wrist rockets visible (although they were used in The Greenhouse Effect). The first miniseries and early ads gave him prominent facial shadows that receded gradually from The Revenge of Cobra to the early first season. Sunbow also animated Destro in his 1988 outfit for a few late commercials.
In the DiC series, Destro had his 1988 outfit, changing to the 1992 outfit with a white mask for season 2. Reel FX based its Destro on the 2003 version. Both DiC and Reel FX kept Destro and other Iron Grenadier-aligned characters and troops as part of Cobra.

| Destro is the faceless power behind MARS (Military Armaments Research System), largest manufacturer of state-of-the-art weaponry. To Destro, war is man's most natural state: the fittest survive and the greatest technological advances are made. He maintains a luxurious lifestyle around the world. Destro provides high-tech arms to any side able to meet his price and will incite war where it does not exist. He dons his silver battle mask (a family tradition) and enters battle himself, either with COBRA Command (Destro is their major weapons supplier) or against them if it's better for business.
Destro respects the G.I. Joe team for their combat skills and expertise, but abhors them for wasting such skills to maintain peace. He's totally dedicated to seeing them undermined, subverted, or destroyed!
| Variations: Some figures were produced without a date stamp on the inside leg.
| Toy Notes: First figure to receive his own commercial; also taller than most figures. Item #6427.

| Once a major supplier and advisor to Cobra, DESTRO now pursues his own diabolical aims. Building up a small army of Iron Grenadiers from his private bodyguards, he incites unrest in unstable countries, creating new markets for his armament. As his influence grows around the world, he dreams the dreams that COBRA COMMANDER once dreamed.
"One of Destro's ancestors started the family fortune by selling arms to both sides during the English civil war. One ancestor was caught in the act by Cromwell's men, and was made to wear an uncomfortable steel mask. (They had to punish him, but they still wanted his weapons.) Since that time, the lairds of the Destro clan have worn the mask with pride and passed it down to succeeding generations!"
| Toy Notes: Item #6059. The 1988 insert catalog shows Destro with a white sword and no cape.

Although Destro is twice the tactician and three times the soldier than Cobra Commander, he is disadvantaged by his own sense of honor in the face of Cobra Commander's utter ruthlessness! Joe's worst enemy, next to COBRA COMMANDER of course, but now that he sells his own Robotic Battle Armor space suits made from designs he stole during a raid on a G.I. Joe science lab, he's more dangerous than ever! (The G.I. Joe scientist who developed the plans was nearly destroyed during Destro's raid, but was brought back to life as ROBO-J.O.E.!) The dark and desolate dangers of space create a mysterious battlefield where only the strongest and bravest survive - so Destro's days are surely numbered!

Version 5: fall 1997 figure three-pack assortment
|
---|
Weapons Supplier | MOS 1: Intelligence
|
| - head: Destro (92, 93, 97, 01, 05/II)
- arms: Destro (92, 97, 01, 05/I)

| Accessories: black machine gun (92 Destro's), black or pink disc launcher with black trigger (92 Destro's), three black discs (92 Destro's), black figure stand (common).
| Destro is the 17th "Laird" of a manor house in the Scottish highlands and the current head of a centuries-old arms manufacturing firm. Tradition holds that the current head of the firm always wears a polished beryllium steel mask when in public. Destro's predecessors supplied weapons and aircraft to the British in World War II, and Destro's father was active in supplying arms to Southeast Asia. The current Destro has been somewhat more ambitious, briefly running his own organization known as the Iron Grenadiers before becoming the arms supplier for Cobra on a regular basis. Although Destro personally despises Cobra Commander, believing him to be a pompous, posturing poltroon, he knows that working with Cobra is good for business. Cobra gives Destro more latitude in designing weapons than most military organizations, and Cobra's penchant for inciting conflict in various parts of the world ensures a continued need for weaponry. The Joes have a grudging respect for Destro even if they disagree with his motives. Believing him to be the man with a sense of personal honor, he is unlike most of Cobra's hierarchy.
From Destro's personal journal: "As long as there are people in this world, there will always be conflict. Technology advances best during times of strife and battle, and there are always those who will take advantage of this. Better it should be someone with honor."
| Variations: Card art and pre-production photos show that this figure was intended to be a recolor of the 1983 version. Early releases came with pink disc launchers instead of black. At one stage of preproduction, the figure was designed with leopard-print collar and thighs. The resulting "Pimp Daddy Destro," so named by the fan community, made it as far as packaged samples before being redesigned. Of these, perhaps a hundred ended up on store shelves. The elusive variant is an ultra-high-demand item and was popular enough to inspire the 2007 convention design. (Collector Peter Hubner has extensive information about this variant.)
| Toy Notes: Carded in a Toys 'R Us-exclusive Cobra Command Team three-pack with Baroness and Cobra Commander. Item #28017.
|

| Accessories: black machine gun (92 Destro's), black figure stand (common).
| The faceless power behind the largest manufacturer of weapons technology, not much is known about Destro other than his reputation for anything at a price. Power is the name of his game and he plays to win - every time. Wherever there's a battle brewing, there's Destro. In fact, he'll incite a battle where one doesn't exist just to further his cause. Doesn't mind getting into the thick of it himself, if it'll turn a profit. Hard to believe anyone could be that diabolical. Anyone but Destro, that is. The silver battle mask he wears into battle is a family tradition and one he displays with pride. Makes you wonder what those folks talked about at the holiday dinner table! The only thing more apparent than his love of cash is his hatred for G.I. Joe. He respects them for their combat skills and expertise on the battlefield, but finds their methods worthless and wasteful in the pursuit of peace. He's cold, calculating, ruthless, and despicable - and those are his better qualities.

They build and supply weapons to any side who can meet their price. The latest leader of the DESTRO clan is one of G.I. Joe's most dangerous adversaries. He often steals the US government's most advanced secrets - and then his corporation makes big profits from the theft. | There are people who always make a profit from war. DESTRO is one of them. It is because of war that the Scottish DESTRO family has thrived for centuries. They build and supply weapons to any side who can meet their price. The latest leader of the DESTRO clan is one of G.I. Joe's most dangerous adversaries. He often steals the US government's most advanced secrets - and then his corporation makes big profits from the theft. DESTRO also causes armed conflicts around the world to create a market for his goods. Recently, his North American operations were damaged by GUNG-HO, causing DESTRO to lose millions of dollars. Now, DESTRO is out for revenge against GUNG-HO and the G.I. JOE team.
"Some people call me corrupt. To me, I'm just a businessman supplying what people want."

His corporation not only manufactures and brokers weapons and war materials, but it also employs agents to spark new conflicts and create new market opportunities for his products. An excellent tactical thinker, DESTRO is known for his calculated cunning, coolness under fire and ruthless determination. For all of his despicable dealings and heinous affiliations, he still considers himself a man of honor and takes pride in the unflagging loyalty he has shown to both COBRA COMMANDER and the BARONESS. A person of serious contradictions, he is arrogant but humble, mercenary but generous, and cruel but fair.

| As Commander of the IRON GRENADIERS and CEO of M.A.R.S. (Military Armaments Research Systems), DESTRO leads the world in weapons development and production. He is also one of the most feared tyrants in the world, simply because of his sheer brilliance. A strange mixture of honorable and terrifying, he instigates conflict, not out of emotional hatred or personal plans of world conquest, but for the weapons sales that will follow. He seeks financial domination over his enemies, but wisely leaves political conquest to mad schemers like COBRA COMMANDER. He comes away victorious even when his allies fail, because he usually has sold weapons to both sides. Even the G.I. JOE Team unknowingly uses M.A.R.S. equipment purchased from dummy companies!
Honor demands DESTRO be in the thick of battle with his troops, and family tradition dictates he wear gold regalia for full scale conflicts. Not just a gaudy show of power, his field battle armor is, of course, practical and functional, being a more advanced prototype version of armor he has sold to other military forces. He has also traded his infamous wrist rockets for more stylish hand-held missile launchers.
"Militarily speaking, of course my gleaming helmet makes an obvious target. It is also the most protected part of my armor!"

The current DESTRO has been more ambitious, running his own organization known as the IRON GRENADIER troops before becoming the arms supplier for COBRA. Although DESTRO personally despises COBRA COMMANDER, believing him to be a pompous, posturing poltroon, he knows that working with COBRA is good for business.
From the personal journal of DESTRO: "As long as there are people in this world, there will always be conflict. Technology advances best during times of strife and battle, and there are always those who will take advantage of this. Better it should be someone with honor."
