Notes: The Baroness's outfit in Sunbow's first miniseries was based on her blue uniform in the comic book (including green-tinted glasses); she did not yet have a figure. Thereafter, she wore her 1984 outfit, with a dark grey belt and gloves reaching nearly to the elbow. The segments of her leg armor were outlined in grey.

The DiC series gave the Baroness a dark blue version of her 1984 outfit, with light blue for her collar, belt, and outlines on her leg armor, as well as light blue gloves with red padding. Spy Troops and Valor vs. Venom used outfits loosely based on the 2002/II and 2004/I versions, respectively.

Headcanon

Born June 6, 1955. The Baroness, originally a Soviet secret agent, was recruited by Cobra Commander in 1977. Her first major assignment was to identify and arrange the assassination of popular and idealistic leaders who might become rivals to Cobra. In 1979 she helped the Commander lay the groundwork for a religious revolution in Iran, but these plans were hastily set aside in favor of an economically-driven worker's revolt with uniformed Cobra soldiers present on scene. The revolt was quickly put down by the Shah, and news footage of the Cobra insignia and the Baroness's image attracted the attention of US Intelligence, leading to the creation of the G.I. Joe Team.

The Baroness's original appearance is represented by Version 6, changing to Version 1 in 1982. In January 1990, two months after Cobra went underground, the Baroness was secretly captured by Snake Eyes and replaced with her half sister Chameleon. The Baroness escaped confinement twelve months later but took shelter with Extensive Enterprises rather than returning to Cobra, preferring to leave Cobra Commander in the dark as to her situation. When Cobra re-emerged in June 1991, the Baroness was usually with the Crimson Twins whenever they worked in concert with Cobra. During this time, her appearance is represented by Version 3.

The Baroness was the spoiled offspring of European parents who made sure that she and her brother, Eugen, had the best of everything in life. During the time of the Southeast Asian conflict, Eugen had abandoned his aristocratic lifestyle. Using the power and influence, he delivered medical supplies and other needed items into the war-torn region. On one tragic occasion, Eugen's sister, Anastasia, accompanied him on what would result in a deal gone bad. Eugen was fatally wounded just as another soldier burst in and apprehended the saboteurs. Anastasia, who had been in another room, believed that the soldier had destroyed both her brother and his supposedly peaceful contacts. This sent her on a course of revenge that would lead her into a life of international terrorism. She joined the ranks of COBRA rising to its top intelligence agent. The Baroness is a highly intelligent and ambitious individual, and often enjoys pitting Destro, her companion, against Cobra Commander even as they all plot the overthrow of G.I. Joe and the conquest of the world.
From G.I. Joe Files: "The Baroness is probably the most dangerous agent within Cobra. She is ultimately loyal only to herself, and serves Cobra only because it is in her best interest to do so. She has an unrelenting hatred towards established governments that she believes are ruled by military machines. Since G.I. Joe is the 'best of the best' in the military world, she despises the Joes most of all."
Toy Notes: Carded in a Toys 'R Us-exclusive Cobra Command Team three-pack with Cobra Commander (97) and Destro (97). Item #28017.

The BARONESS has never made a move that has not been calculated to achieve one primary goal - her own self interest. The formation of the Crimson Strike Team exemplifies this behavior. In alliance with TOMAX and XAMOT, she formed an elite squad of VIPERS loyal only to its founders. Financial incentives provided by the Crimson Twins coupled with the powerful brainwashing of the BARONESS have created two lethal squads of Crimson infantry troopers, one squad led by TOMAX and the other by his brother XAMOT. By all outward appearances, the COBRA VIPERS are all that is desired by COBRA COMMANDER - powerful, lethal, greedy, and loyal to the COBRA cause of dominating the world! Yet the BARONESS has utilized her almost siren-like hypnotic techniques to train the VIPERS to obey only herself and if it meets her needs, the crimson twins. Brains and ambition are admirable attributes. However, when mixed with insatiable greed and a deep lust for power, the result can be lethal. BARONESS is that result. The Crimson Strike Team provides the lethal means to achieve her desired maniacal ends.
Variations: Early releases (the majority) were mistakenly colored a pinkish fuchsia. The last run of the figure sets was the correct crimson color.
Toy Notes: Boxed in a convention-exclusive set with Tomax (02/II), Xamot (02/II), and twelve copies of Viper (02/II). This figure is considered a moderately high-demand item.

Incredibly self-involved and lacking in empathy, the BARONESS has all the primary qualifications of a world-class oil company executive or corporate raider. Born in wealth, she was a student radical and dabbled in extremist fringe groups before aligning herself with COBRA and worming her way into the confidences of both COBRA COMMANDER and DESTRO. Nominally designated the Director of Intelligence for COBRA Command, her duties actually covered a much wider range of loathsome activities. More recently, her allegiance seems to have shifted markedly toward DESTRO, but it remains to be seen if this is simply a scam. Coldly cynical yet hopelessly romantic, calculating but na´ve, brutally blunt and prone to beating around the bush at times, the BARONESS is a mass of contradictions. The one glaring consistency in her muddled thought processes is her intense hatred of the G.I. JOE Team, with FLINT being singled out for that special dislike she reserves for those she suspects to be her betters.
"The ideals of COBRA are the true reflection of the self-serving masses that comprise the 'me generation.' What fairy tale fantasy about valor, loyalty, and integrity is the G.I. JOE team upholding?"
Toy Notes: Carded in a two-pack with Flint (02/II). Item #53208.

It is believed that BARONESS received her training in espionage and sabotage at an exclusive training facility run by a former Warsaw Pact intelligence agency. Although she is officially the head of all COBRA intelligence operations, she also has old ties and loyalties to DESTRO, who has his own business and interests outside of COBRA. BARONESS denies that this is an ethical conflict. How can it be? She has no ethics to speak of. The BARONESS is a world-class expert in cryptography, psychological warfare, and bio-chemical skin-irritants. She consistantly places third in the annual COBRA combat pistol championship, but this is no mean feat considering that DESTRO always places second. But in her arrogance she believes that her failure to secure the gold medal is due to political favoritism rather than the quality of her marksmanship.
"I hate the G.I. JOE Team. Who do they think they are? What makes them so special? And they dress so badly!"
Toy Notes: Carded in a two-pack with Hard Drive (04). Item #55920. Character and early promotional art indicate that this version was originally to have either removable eyeglasses or none at all.

A rich, spoiled aristocrat, the BARONESS undersands how to use power to get what she wants. Even as she helps COBRA COMMANDER build his M.A.S.S. DEVICE machine and take over the world, she's looking for a way to turn this to her advantage. She's not afraid to take risks, going deep underwater among huge, carnivorous tubeworms to get the rare heavy water before the G.I. JOE team can reach it. The BARONESS is not beyond making a deal with the enemy when necessary: if teaming up with the G.I. JOE team will keep her alive, she'll do it - then double cross them, of course.
"What good are honor and loyalty - they do not buy you wealth, fame, or power. As long as the G.I. JOE team holds onto those foolish ideals, they will never defeat COBRA."

The spoiled offspring of wealthy European aristocrats, the BARONESS was a student radical who extended her destructive activities beyond universities to the international arena. She eventually found her way into the COBRA organization and became a trusted lieutenant to COBRA COMMANDER. She was severely burned during a COBRA night attack operation and had extensive plastic surgery. Her relationship with DESTRO calls into question her loyalties to the commander, as she is always one to link her destiny to the strongest individual in an organization - whoever will give her the means to achieve her goals.
