Battle for the Train of Gold

12th of 55 episodes in Sunbow season 1. Written by David Carren. First aired October 16, 1985.

Previous episode: The Pyramid of Darkness, Part 5
Next episode: Operation Mind Menace

Ready for a possible Cobra attack, the Joes guard the Bureau of Engraving. The attack comes, but only as a distraction while Maj. Bludd steals a videotape with information on the gold depository at Fort Knox. G.I. Joe sends all its forces to protect the installation, over the objections of its commanding officer, Gen. Stack. As the Joes prepare for another battle, Zartan uses a tunnel beneath the repository to kidnap and impersonate the general and order the guards outside.

Noticing the guards' departure, Duke, Scarlett, and Snake Eyes check out the vault and are captured by Zartan, who uses them as hostages as Cobra transports the gold down the tunnel to a waiting train. A battle ensues as Cobra occupies the base and destroys most of the Joe equipment. Eight Joes discover the tunnel and give chase but have no fast way to pursue the departing train. Thunder leads the team to a nearby ranch where they mount horses and use a shortcut to reach Cobra. The hostages break free of their restraints shortly before the Joes get on board. During the fighting, Buzzer's chainsaw cuts into the pressure regulator, causing an explosion that throws the train off the tracks. The Dreadnoks escape but the Joes recover the gold and receive an apology from Gen. Stack.
