Episode 141: "Top Bolt"

Aired 10/15/2016, written by Joanna Lewis & Kristine Songco (their fifth episode);
with Meghan McCarthy also contributing to the story (her twenty-sixth episode)
Quick Take: Grazing the top of the Crystal tier, this is one of the best episodes of the season. I don't think I've ever seen this particular kind of friendship problem addressed on any kids' show before: a long-established dynamic between friends that seems to work and in which both are comfortable, but that's actually holding them both back and requires one to constantly keep a secret from the other. The parallels to codependency are obvious in the way both major guests are portrayed. And both Sky Stinger and Vapor Trail are basically good ponies who deeply care about each other. Their falling out and their work toward a resolution are expertly written and acted. On the other side of things, Twilight and Dash's disagreement plays out in a fresh way as RD actually has a good point but knows pretty much right away that Twilight has the better solution (though Dash's concern is valid and requires follow-up). Lewis and Songco have consistently given us episodes that capture just what MLP ought to be. So far I believe this is their best work.
