Episode 124: "Newbie Dash"

Aired 5/7/2016, story by Dave Polsky (his fifteenth episode) & Dave Rapp (his first); written by Dave Rapp
Quick Take: A landmark episode, in that Dash finally becomes an actual Wonderbolt. Spitfire and Soarin are both fun to watch here, and the Kelly Sheridan-based Misty Fly is the new breakout character (although Sheridan's presence here makes me wonder where Starlight is). I'm no fan of any sort of hazing ritual, but Dash's ego issues are precisely why military-style outfits do the whole embarrassing nickname thing. (See here for more on that.) The morally ambiguous portrayal of the Wonderbolts in earlier episodes leaves their acceptance of Dash in realistic doubt. I'd say the drama and the comedy both work about 75% of the time here. Dash's impressions of her friends are perhaps my favorite moment, but Dash placing Scootaloo in apparent danger (whether or not that was intended by Dash or the show creators) takes away from my enjoyment of the climax. Overall very good, about average for the series as a whole.
